2010 updates from Knolls Wood

November work day 2010

The Friends’ last work day of the year was Sunday 14 November when the main task was to plant some Scots pines in the strip of woodland next to Plantation Road. Twenty-two saplings were planted – they had been dug up a few days before from an area in Rushmere park that was being cleared.

Another task was to plant blackthorn bushes at the Sandy Lane entrance to fill in the wide gap there. Holly was planted earlier in the year, but not all has survived.

While most people were digging and planting, a few volunteers carried out the usual litter pick..

With ten or so volunteers, the work took only an hour and a half. Thanks to everyone who turned out – more hands make light work, as the saying goes. We now need some steady rain to help the new trees take.

Summer Work Party & BBQ

The 2010 FOKW Summer Work Party and Barbecue took place on Sunday 27th June and a selection of photos of both sections of the day can be seen below. A full report will be given in our next newsletter.

Over the hill...but not far away

A different perspective on Knolls Wood... Yes it is in the picture, just on the skyline above the farm buildings on the right.

Walk from Knolls Wood through Taylors Ride and then on the marked path across the field shown above (mind the cows), over the bridge and you can lunch here!

The competitive R's

May, and the Rhododendrons are in full bloom. But there's a battle going on in the midst of the three R's - Rhododendron, Rowan and Redwood! The Monkey Puzzle competes with the Rhododendron, which is why the Rangers are so obsessed with cutting them back. They do look so good at this time of year though.
